Amnesty International: Human Rights in 19th Century Sheffield

Local Historian David Price will talk about human rights campaigning in Sheffield in the 19th century. This survey of the struggle for human and civil rights includes:1. The impact of Paine's Rights of Man in Sheffield 2. The anti-slavery campaign.3. Chartism4. Sheffield and the Crimean War - attitudes to Russia and to the suffering of our troops.5. The liberal nonconformist conscience – H J Wilson MP - opponent of the opium trade with China and the Boer War and his wife Charlotte opposing the Contagious Diseases Acts.Talk organised by Amnesty International Sheffield. An entrance donation of £2 will be requested to cover expenses
