Transition Sheffield Skills for Sustainability workshops

Transition Sheffield is hosting four workshops, the first in a series of skills programmes. Details for each are below. Planting soft fruit, growing your own garlic, a simple introduction Saturday 1st October 10am-12.30pm Venueto be confirmed. Learn the basics of how to plant and grow blackcurrants, redcurrants, gooseberries. How to propagatethem by hardwood cuttings. Raspberry basics. The basics of growing garlic. Information sheets to summarise important learning points. Hopefully a small amount of practical hands-on stuff. 8-10 places. Terry and Rick have both been involved in projects aimed at reducing the environmental cost of meeting basic needs for 25 years. They are both members of the Fireside Housing Co-op in Sheffield. This workshop offers the chance to visit Fireside. It will include an illustrated talk on low impact living followed by questions and dicussion. 20 places. This workshop is held in collaboration with Sheffield Abundance who will provide the apples. It includes preparation of fruit and vegetables, cooking with additional ingredients, sterilisation of jars and sealing for preservation. 6 places. Contact Ruth Davenport rudek@tiscali.co.ukCreating A Low Energy House Sunday 2nd October 2-5pm. 21 Eastgrove Rd, S10 2NN This workshop is based at a house which is a member of the Old Home Super Home network in Sheffield 10 (www.superhomes.org.uk). Learn facts and figures on the costs and performance of various energy saving measures including photovoltaics (solar electricity), solar water heating, condensation gas boiler, wood-burning stove, passive solar heating from a conservatory, insulation measures etc. 20 places.
