Human Rights and Asylum Housing: Action Day Conference

Sat 24 Feb 2018, 10.30-4pm, The Sanctuary, Chapel Walk S1 2PD

A conference discussing the £4 billion Government AASC (Asylum Accommodation and Support Services Contracts) from 2019 to 2029. Various Parliamentary Committees have confirmed what asylum tenants know only too well: G4S and Serco asylum housing is disgraceful and unacceptable.

South Yorkshire Migration and Asylum Action Group (SYMAAG) helped make the film "The Asylum Market" last year showing how G4S intimidate tenants who complain, but it looks like the Government is happy to see them take more taxpayers money to provide slum housing for asylum tenants. SYMAAG want to stop them. This conference will discuss how.

The Sanctuary, Chapel Walk, Sheffield S1 2PD is opposite the Crucible Theatre, 10 mins walk from bus/train stations. Please arrive 10.30am for 11am start. The event is free but please let SYMAAG know if intend to come, as places are limited. Email Do not let a lack of money stop you coming to SYMAAG events. Bring your ticket to the event and SYMAAG can reimburse you in cash for reasonable travel expenses, or contact them in advance.

Sharrow Lantern Carnival 2018 is on Sunday 1st April and there are free lantern making workshops running on Saturdays and Sundays 1-5pm until the day before the carnival.

The workshops rely on volunteers; you do not need to know how to make a lantern, they will teach you. You just need to be friendly and happy and help new people when they arrive to make a lantern. They are looking for 2-3 lead volunteers for each workshop and then as many other willing hands as possible.

If you are interested please email and try to attend on Saturday 27th January, 10-12pm for a training session.

The Real Junk Food Project

Feb 2018

The Real Junk Food Project has various excellent volunteer-run projects, using food which would otherwise go to waste. The following operate on the basis of pay-as-you-feel:

Steeple Corner Café (Victoria Centre, 37 Stafford Rd., Norfolk Park S2 2SE) open 5 days a week.
Citrus Café, Zest Centre, 18 Upperthorpe, S6 3NA) open 6 days a week.
Shareouse Market (49 Carlisle Street, S4 7LJ) open Tuesday–Saturday 12-2pm as a pay-as-you-feel store.

They also run Fuel For School, an educational programme helping primary schools to take direct environmental action and make a positive change in the local community, and they offer catering for conferences, parties, weddings and events from 5 – 350 people, including vegan, vegetarian and gluten-free options.

The Real Junk Food Project

Feb 2018

Foodhall Café is an open community venue which offers food that would have been thrown away, surplus donated by retailers, on a "Pay-as-you-feel" basis. It is run by volunteers and encourages community engagement between the general public including students, homeless people, mental health groups, isolated people, people with addiction problems and people who need to access food.

You can help, whether by just visiting to eat and socialise, or maybe food preparation, or even playing the house piano.

The cafe opens Thursdays and Fridays, there are also art workshops and reading groups, and some nights it becomes a DIY venue for fundraiser gigs.
